Item Slots, Dice Slots and Upgrade Consumables

Tell GrimKeep slot upgrades apart, compare the cost of filling an empty item slot, and avoid treating a max-health upgrade as a verified heal.

FAQ

Which upgrade adds an item slot?
The official reference describes Unidentified Scroll as an item-slot upgrade. Unidentified Potion instead increases dice slots, while Unidentified Brew increases maximum health.
Does increasing maximum health guarantee an immediate heal?
The cited item description establishes a maximum-health increase but not a matching current-health restoration. Do not rely on an undocumented heal when survival depends on it.
Should I always equip something in a free slot?
Not automatically. Beggar’s Staff rewards unused item slots, so occupying a slot can remove part of your existing Mult. Compare the net result.

Which resource does each upgrade consumable change?

Read the effect rather than relying on a similar item name. Dice slots, item slots and maximum health are separate resources, so one upgrade does not automatically solve another shortage. Match the described change to the counter you need, then verify the resulting capacity or health values in your current game version.

The official item catalogue checked on 4 November 2026 lists these distinctions:

Item Described change Do not confuse it with
Unidentified Potion One more dice slot An additional equipment slot
Unidentified Scroll One more item slot A larger dice bag or another die face
Unidentified Brew 25 more maximum health A verified promise to restore current health

These are pre-release reference descriptions. This page does not supply unverified hotkeys, shop prices, capacity limits, or claims that these upgrades persist into a new run.

Should you fill every empty item slot?

Check existing effects before occupying the space. Beggar’s Staff rewards unused item slots with Mult, so filling a slot can remove something your current attack already uses. The correct comparison includes the new item’s benefit and the lost empty-slot contribution. Looking only at the new tooltip can hide a net loss.

Consider an illustrative attack with 80 combined points and a resolved Mult of 5, which already includes one contribution from an empty slot. Its result is 80 × 5 = 400.

Now suppose a candidate would add 10 points but occupy that slot, removing one Mult contribution. Under precisely those assumptions, the new comparison is 90 × 4 = 360. The positive-looking points addition is not enough to offset the lost Mult.

This is a chosen numerical example, not the effect of a named ten-point item. Check the actual values for your own equipment using the damage calculator and the item-choice worksheet.

Does an extra dice slot improve every build equally?

Extra capacity can make room for another die, but its value still depends on the faces, effects and combo you are trying to use. A capacity upgrade does not by itself provide the required die or guarantee a longer hand. Check how the added capacity supports your present plan before assuming a damage increase.

For a straight route, ask whether the extra capacity helps you submit the sequence you actually need. For a matching-dice route, ask whether the dice available support the desired hand. The dice roles guide explains why an extra die can contribute more than its face sum.

Can you use a maximum-health upgrade as an emergency heal?

Do not depend on a heal that the cited description does not establish. Maximum health and current health are different values. The official Brew entry confirms an increase to the first, but it does not specify how the second changes. If survival depends on restoring health now, verify the actual effect before relying on it.

A useful check is to note both current and maximum health before the upgrade, then compare both afterwards. Keep the version with that observation. An increased health ceiling can be useful even when it does not establish a specific immediate recovery amount.

The same care applies to health-cost items. A damage bonus is not automatically safe merely because it makes a large number. Read the cost and current encounter state alongside the result in the damage explanation.

What should you check after consuming an upgrade?

Check the counter relevant to the item, then return to the decision the upgrade was meant to enable. Record item capacity, dice capacity, or both health values as appropriate. If an effect does not match its description, keep the item name, version and before-and-after state instead of guessing a replacement rule.

Do not treat an upgrade as permanent account progression without evidence for that specific effect. The official FAQ distinguishes fresh runs from unlocks that carry over, but that broad statement is not a guarantee that a particular consumed item’s benefit survives death or a new run.

Which official references establish these distinctions?

The item catalogue supports the named upgrade effects and the unused-slot condition, while the FAQ describes the broader run-and-unlock structure. The numerical slot example is an original illustration with declared assumptions. It does not document every inventory operation, interaction, or persistence rule in the full game.
