FAQ

Which hero is a sensible first pick?
The Huntress is a useful learning choice because she retains unused rerolls between attacks. That is an editorial recommendation based on her published perk, not a measured claim that she wins more often than The Beast.
Does a failed run erase every unlock?
No. The official FAQ distinguishes the run, which ends on death, from unlocked heroes, items and encounters, which carry forward. It does not promise that the current bag, health and run inventory persist after death.

The October 2026 demo covered the Outskirts. Its availability ended before this guide was written; the full game is scheduled for November 30. Use these documented systems to understand old runs and prepare for launch, rather than treating this as a completed full-game walkthrough.

Which starting hero should you choose?

Choose The Huntress if you want to learn how to preserve useful rerolls, or The Beast if you deliberately want to trade health for more attempts. Their different resource rules matter more than an unsupported tier ranking. The recommendation here is based on their published perks, not a comparison of personal win rates.

Decision The Huntress The Beast
Published reroll rule Unused rerolls carry between attacks Additional rerolls cost 10 Health each
First-run habit Compare a good current attack with the value of keeping rerolls Check the health cost before buying another chance
Mistake to avoid Spending every reroll simply because it remains available Treating paid rerolls as free

See saving and reroll rules for the difference between an attack resource and a saved run.

What should you check before committing an attack?

Check the enemy’s next action, your available health and defense, and the damage your current items actually support. A longer-looking combo can still be the wrong choice if it fails to activate the build. GrimKeep is turn-based, so pausing to compare those decisions does not require fast reactions.

  1. Read intent. Identify the action shown by the enemy before deciding whether the turn is safe.
  2. Read item conditions. Distinguish bonuses for a specific face, a kind, or a straight.
  3. Compare outcomes. Use the attack display and the damage calculation guide rather than judging a hand by its name alone.
  4. Price another roll. Include the hero perk and any unused-reroll bonuses you would give up.
  5. Check survival. If the next action is dangerous, review defense and sacrifice.

This is a decision checklist, not a fixed sequence of button presses or a promise that a particular hand will appear.

How should you choose a route and improve the bag?

Choose the next encounter for what the current build needs, rather than following a supposedly guaranteed map route. The official map contains fights, elites, shops and events, while dice and items change how attacks score. Ask what the next purchase or reward improves before adding another unrelated trigger to the bag.

A build supported by matching-dice items has a clearer reason to strengthen that plan than to buy an item whose condition it rarely reaches. This is an item-selection principle, not a claim that every run offers the same stock or rewards.

After each encounter, note what ended the fight, what endangered the run, and what would make the next fight safer. That makes a failed attempt informative without inventing a single optimal route.

Why should older demo advice be checked against its date?

Check whether the advice predates the October balance changes before copying a route or damage target. The developers adjusted the Outskirts during the demo, including later enemies and boss encounters. A video of an older build can therefore show a real run whose difficulty no longer matches a later demo version.

Read the version history and boss preparation guide before treating an old health total, item choice or encounter as a launch rule.

Which sources support this guide?

This researched guide uses published systems and dated updates; it does not claim hands-on completion or access to the unreleased November build.
